Author Dawn FitzGeraldDawn FitzGerald grew up in Upstate New York wanting to be a firefighter, a soccer player, a nun, a lawyer, or president. She became a teacher and a writer in order to become all of these things and more.

After winning a local writer's contest for an essay she wrote about being a substitute teachers, Dawn was encouraged to pursue writing for children. Her first book was a biography of the actress Angela Bassett (Chelsea House Publishers). She went on to write more celebrity biographies for the house, including Ben Stiller and Destiny's Child. Her credits growing, Dawn decided to being pitching her own story ideas and soon she published Julia Butterfly Hill: Saving the Redwoods (Millbrook) and Robert Ballard: Discovering the Titanic (Millbrook).

Dawn loved to read. She was passionate about sharing good books with her students and creating exciting lessons for them. Inspired by dynamic women, like Vinnie Ream, Billie Jean King, and Betty Friedan, Dawn liked to read and write about the feisty women who influenced their times and made a place for themselves in American history.
